Locomotive 401 is another unrivaled locomotive. She is an SD-7, which was the first model in General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division’s (EMD's) SD (Special Duty) series as a 6-axle road switcher. She is powered by a 16-cylinder diesel engine, producing 1,500 horses for its six traction motors. What makes Locomotive 401 so very special is that she was the only EMD locomotive bought by the Nevada Northern Railway. Befitting its unique status, EMD created a special paint scheme for her, nicknamed the desert war bonnet. The design captures an elegance that was only used on this locomotive! It is truly the rarest of the rare! What’s even scarcer, Locomotive 401 is still in her original desert war bonnet paint scheme!
